While many national parks in the world profess to be “grand”, the Enshi Grand Canyon lives up to the title with a spectacular collection of karst formation cliffs and spires that command attention hundreds of meters above the Qingjiang River gorge.
But the real highlight is the cantilevered cliffwalk that winds in and around the nooks and crannies of the huge east facing limestone wall. To reach the cliffwalk, visitors must board a gondola that rises hundreds of meters from the main visitors center to the cooler mountain-top plateau where all the trails are located. After hiking for several kilometers north, the trails combine to descend a steep series of steps that descend back down the canyon. Some of the pain of the descent is relieved by a mountain escalator that was installed in 2013 but this is not a hike for those who are out of shape or become easily exhausted on a humid summer day.
