Zhongxian Yangtze River Bridge was one of the earliest road crossings of the Yangtze River to be located between Chongqing City and Yichang City. For the first several years of operation, the bridge was approximately 90 meters above the normal level of the Yangtze River before the giant 3 Gorges reservoir began to fill up much of the height below the truss.

The bridge is unique for having unusually tall towers that extend approximately 90 meters below the level of the deck truss. This bridge-on-stilts look can be seen on several other large suspension bridges in China including the Egongyan Bridges, Beipanjiang Bridge Hukun, Puli Bridge, Balinghe Bridge, Qingshuihe Bridge and Sunxihe Bridge. The foundation to deck underside height on Sunxihe is the tallest in the world at 114.5 meters.
