The Tanise Footbridge opened in 1954 as the longest span footbridge in the world with a tower to tower distance of 297 meters. At the time the footbridge was also one of the highest in Japan at 54 meters. Sometimes referred to as the Tanize Bridge, the span has a second set of cables midway between the top cables and the deck. It is unclear why the engineers used this double arrangement or if was part of a modification made at a later date.
The entire area has become a popular tourist attraction with camping available along the river below the north side of the bridge.
