When the Shooting Star opened in 1937 at Coney Island Park in Cincinnati, the coaster become one of the tallest in America with a height of 88 feet. Designed by Herbert Schmeck of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, the layout used portions of the previous Clipper twister roller coaster including the final spiral helix.

When consistent flooding of the park became a problem, Coney Island was closed in 1971 and rebuilt as a new theme park at a location north of Cincinnati called Kings Island. Unfortunately the Shooting Star would not be moved to the new park. In 1981 a heavily modified version of the Shooting Star was used for the Mighty Canadian Mine Buster at Canada's Wonderland. The Wildcat wood coaster at Coney Island was also used for the design of the Wild Beast at Canada's Wonderland.
