No other city on the African continent is more associated with high bridges than Constantine, Algeria. Located about 50 miles (80 kms) from the Mediterranean coast, the city is unique for having a deep river gorge running right through its center. Four classic bridges cross the deepest section of this natural barrier including the El Kantara, Sidi Rached, Sidi M’Cid and Mellah Slimane (Passerelle Perregaux). The highest of all is the Sidi M’Cid suspension bridge opened in 1912.
More then a 100 years later the newest crossing opened in 2014 in the form of the spectacular Salah Bey cable stayed bridge. Hyped as the "eighth wonder" of the city, the 1,119 meter long structure consists of towers as tall as 130 meters supporting a deck 27.34 meters wide.
