Upon its opening in 1964, the giant Mexico City Racer became the tallest coaster in the world with a lift hill 110 feet high. Also known as La Montana Rusa, the dual track coaster layout actually consisted of a continuous mobius loop track that resulted in the trains coming back into the station on the opposite side they departed. The two sides were each about 3,900 feet long for a total track length of almost 8,000 feet.

The Racer started with a shallow, ramp-style drop of 25 feet before a wide turnaround led to the first major drop of the coaster at 85 feet. The hills that followed offered an assault of ejector airtime, especially for riders in the front car of the train. The massive, unusually wide turnarounds gave riders a moment to catch their breath before the next run of powerful humpback hills. The design was reportedly the inspiration for Colossus at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California.
