Giant Dipper Venice

The Giant Dipper Venice is one of 7 Prior & Church designed "Bobs" twisters that opened along the amusement piers of California between 1923 and 1925. All of these coasters had heights of between 70 and 80 feet with first drops of around 70 feet. The trains all had newer two-seater cars with flanged wheels that were connected by ball and socket couplings that could negotiate the tight turns and sharp direction changes.

The Giant Dipper Venice lift hill rose to a height of 75 feet above the pier or 95 feet above the ocean level. Unlike several of the other Prior & Church designs, the Venice ride began with a shallow first drop off the lift that led into a 180 degree turn before plunging down a second drop that looks to have dipped slightly below the level of the pier deck. This pseudo-double dip dropped approximately 80 feet in elevation from the top of the lift. The Tornado at Coney Island also had a similar ramp-style first drop and turn at the start of the ride.
