The highest pipeline bridge in the United States, the Flaming Gorge reservoir bridge is also one of the nation’s biggest with a span of 1,919 feet (585 mtrs) - even longer than the Brooklyn bridge. More than half the space beneath the bridge is filled with water backed up from the 502 foot (153 mtr) high Flaming Gorge dam located approximately 20 miles (32 kms) downstream of the bridge. Even with a full reservoir, the pipeline is at least 190 feet (58 mtrs) above the water - higher than any other pipeline bridge in the U.S. Despite its utilitarian design, the bridge was quite impressive up close with the huge ’harps’ of stabilizing cables looking as breathtaking as one of Santiago Calatrava’s bridges - something I did not expect from a pipeline bridge.
